CHAPEL OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE
The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene is located on the grounds of St. Mary Magdalene's Retreat, a wooded 40-acre ranch at the end of a private road just outside of Yreka in Siskiyou County of northern California. The property played a part in local history having been an old Indian campground which was later the site of a dance hall and saloon used by gold miners and loggers. The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene is at 4000 feet elevation in a relatively dry, forested mountainous region in extreme northern California, approximately 25 miles south of the Oregon border and 4-1/2 miles south of Yreka off Interstate-5. The oldest structure on the ranch, once a brothel, has made an about face and now serves as the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene. This log cabin, dating back to the late 1800's has oak side pews and a traditional altar. Lighting in the chapel can be provided by either candles and kerosene lamps or electric overhead lights. There is also a sound system available. Small and cozy, the chapel will seat up to 16 people including the wedding couple. It has exposed overhead log beams and is framed entirely of logs. In 2005 it received a badly needed new roof and insulation. Since its conversion in 1996, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene has been used for a variety of events such as day retreats, all night prayer vigils, and coming of age ceremonies. For several years it was the meeting place of St. Mary Magdalene's Old Catholic Church and, later, Shepherd of the Woods Anglican Church. It has also hosted many weddings, baptisms, and ceremonies for the renewal of vows and blessing of civil marriages.
